Read the menu together
Start with what the restaurant actually serves, then collect the group preferences. Menu categories and dish names vary between restaurants. Ask staff to describe unfamiliar items rather than assuming a name guarantees the same preparation you have tried elsewhere.
Choose a range of dishes
If you want to share, select dishes with different main ingredients and preparations. Tell the restaurant the headcount and ask how its portions are intended to be served. Check whether rice, noodles or other accompaniments are included or ordered separately.
Explain important restrictions
Discuss ingredient restrictions before choosing dishes, including sauces and garnishes. Ask what changes the kitchen can make. A menu label or a familiar dish name is not enough to establish that an order meets a particular requirement.
Confirm the complete order
Repeat the dishes, accompaniments and any agreed changes before the order goes through. For takeout, check the containers and receipt when collecting. Keep the restaurant contact details available if you need to clarify a missing item.
